چکیده

Nanofiltration with inorganic meso-porous membranes is being considered more and more for water purification applications. For specific applications inorganic membranes may have advantages over organic polymer-based membranes due to their rigid pore structure, and thermochemical stability. However, the permeability and, partly through that, the permselectivity of inorganic membranes need to be improved before they can really become competitive. To achieve that, the membrane structure and its synthesis must be optimized and developed further to meet challenging membrane design requirements. This work shows how these requirements can be met in the synthesis of thin homogeneous supported meso-porous γ-alumina membranes on top of a hybrid α-Al2O3 support. Initial water permeation and permselectivity testing of these membranes gave promising results and perspectives of further improvement.

Atomic layer deposition-based functionalization of materials for medical and environmental health applications

Nanoporous alumina membranes exhibit high pore densities, well-controlled and uniform pore sizes, as well as straight pores. Owing to these unusual properties, nanoporous alumina membranes are currently being considered for use in implantable sensor membranes and water purification membranes. Atomic layer deposition is a thin-film growth process that may be used to modify the pore size in a nan...

A Carbonaceous Membrane based on a Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIM-1) for Water Treatment

As insufficient access to clean water is expected to become worse in the near future, water purification is becoming increasingly important. Membrane filtration is the most promising technologies to produce clean water from contaminated water. Although there have been many studies to prepare highly water-permeable carbon-based membranes by utilizing frictionless water flow inside the carbonaceo...

Plasticization-enhanced hydrogen purification using polymeric membranes.

Polymer membranes are attractive for molecular-scale separations such as hydrogen purification because of inherently low energy requirements. However, membrane materials with outstanding hydrogen separation performance in feed streams containing high-pressure carbon dioxide and impurities such as hydrogen sulfide and water are not available. We report highly permeable, reverse-selective membran...

Extraction of chlorpyrifos and malathion from water by metal nanoparticles.

The nanoparticles of gold and silver in solution state and supported over activated alumina are effective systems for the quantitative removal of chlorpyrifos and malathion, two common pesticides found in surface waters of developing nations, from water. In the solution phase, these pesticides adsorb onto the nanoparticles' surfaces and upon interaction for a long time, the nanoparticles with a...
